There are some habits that are easy to implement and leave a huge impact on our life and yet underrated. Here I will share 10 such habits that are relatable, practical, easy to implement and can improve your overall health .
10 Most Underrated Habits for a Healthy Lifestyle (easy and effective)
1. Multitasking
Being multitasking is appreciated these days. Every field requires you to be multitasking but according to the Ayurveda, multitasking is not good for your mind and overall health.
Nowadays everyone is trying to be multitasking in almost every field. For example watching television while eating, watching the video while also reading the comments simultaneously or scrolling social media pages while talking on the phone call.
Multitasking simply means doing two or more tasks at the same time. Ayurveda has a slightly different point of view for it. According to the Ayurveda, doing two or more tasks at the same time can weaken your mind and greatly reduce the attention span.
Concurrent tasks can also harm the power to focus and concentrate. This is the reason we find it very difficult to sit and wait for even two minutes. It is the sad reality of today's children who get bored without phones because they are having constant stimulation by phones in their hands.
On the other hand if you start focusing only on one task at a time you will be amazed to know how fast your ability to focus and concentration will increase and you will become much more productive.
2. Eating when the mind is disturbed
Just like what we eat impacts our health, the state of mind when the food is consumed also impacts our health. This is the reason Ayurveda focuses not only on what food is consumed but also on the way in which the food is ingested.
Your mind plays a major role as to how efficiently you would assimilate your food and absorb nutrients from it.
Try it out for once. Just have food on the day you are so angry. The first signal you will get is that your body will not ask for the food and however if you consume it, you will not be able to assimilate it properly and as a result you probably would be feeling an upset stomach.
Our mind to gut connection is strong and this is why Ayurveda suggests not to eat when you are angry, extremely sad, anxious or disturbed.
Do not avoid the body signals and do not force yourself with food. It is a good remedy to sit quietly, calm down and take a deep breath before eating your food. The after results would not be disappointing surely.
3. Suppression of the urges
Do you, while watching your favourite episode, delay your urge to urinate or do you often suppress yawning due to social norms and personal inhibition?
By suppressing these urges, we are denying ourselves from our true nature. Well nature calls us for a reason.
According to the Ayurveda Our body feels the sensation to release these urges because the stimuli in our nervous system call for it. Denying these urges can cause the major factor of disease development.
Various modern researches show that suppressing these urges can lead to high levels of stress and relapse.
Well there may be some understandable situations where you have to suppress your urges but including them in your habit is the silliest way to damage your body.
4. Setting tone for the day
How often do we wake up and it's already late for work? Then we do all the chores in a rush and somehow reach our workplace.
According to the Ayurveda , the way we start our day sets a tone for the rest of the day. If we start our day by rushing things then we're gonna carry on the mood, doing things impatiently and inadequately increasing the stress level.
On the other hand, if we wake up timely in the morning and give some time to ourselves before the world demands our time, we can stay calm and joyful throughout the day almost effortlessly.
You can spend your morning time doing yoga, walking in a park, getting ready peacefully and preparing food for yourself. It may seem silly but the benefits lie in its daily practice.
5. Getting up just after eating
In today's busy and fast life, we just get up from the dining table as soon as we have finished the meal and move on. Eating has become just a task while we are being very busy at work.
We should understand that while eating, our body goes through a certain process and getting up immediately after eating kind of shocks the body. This is why Ayurveda suggests sitting in Vajrasana for about 10 minutes after taking the meal. If it is not possible to sit in this posture, the least you can do is to not hurriedly get up from your seat after taking the food.
Just sit like this for at least 5 minutes and you will see the minor digestive disorders like gas, bloating and acidity disappear with no extra effort.
6. Type of content we consume
According to the Ayurveda , we not only eat through our mouth but through all our senses in the form of impulses. What kind of impulse our senses feel hugely impacts our internal balance of the mind and body.
If you observe closely, our actions are the imitation of our surroundings. This is why what kind of people we interact with or what kind of content we subject to our mind plays a significant role in shaping our personality.
Indulging yourself in gossiping all the time or watching violent content may give instant gratification but impacts our mind negatively.
On the other hand, if we interact with the people who have a positive outlook , and watch the content that brings motivation and positivity, it would make us feel more calm and cheerful.
Try noticing a person around you who is always busy gossiping, you will find that person most insecure and stressed out.
7. Keeping the spine erect
Maintaining an erect spine has some amazing benefits. It not only keeps the back pain away but also makes us look more confident and taller.
When we keep our backbone straight, energy flows upwards and we are able to maintain our awareness better. I'm sure you have noticed that when you sit at the study table to work, you feel more energetic and focus your work better. On the other hand, if you try to study on the bed, you will feel sleepy and less focused all the time. This is the reason why meditation postures are focused on keeping the spine erect.
So always try to sit on the back of the chair and while standing try not to drop your shoulders down. Just try practising these things for a few days and then they will become your habit.
8. Drinking icy drinks along with the meal
Nothing is like having a burger with a glass of coke. Isn't it?
Not really! It's not just about the burger but the icy drink added with it. How often do we do so?
When we say we're on diet, we push ourselves towards icy lemon water or fruit juice along with the meal.
When we eat something, our body increases the temperature of the body so as to digest the food. In Ayurveda it is also considered as ignition of digestive fire. Drinking the icy lemon water, juice or even water may put off this fire of digestion due to which the food eaten (no matter how healthy it was) gets rotten with producing the toxins.
However if you want to have juice or water anyway, just take it before the meal not along or after the meal.
According to Ayurveda, curd or buttermilk, due to their oily nature, is considered to sustain the digestive fire and recommended to drink after lunch.
In conclusion, avoiding any drink along or after taking a meal can help you achieve your fitness goal much faster.
9. Opting sports as exercise
If doing gym, cardio or working out at home doesn't excite you, choosing an interesting outdoor sport can be the best solution.
Playing does not only give you proper workout of the body but also teaches you coordination, discipline and focus which are very important parts of our day to day life.
It is noticeable how dancers are able to maintain their fitness effortlessly, that's because they enjoy dancing. It is a natural stress burster. Even after knowing the benefits of playing outdoor games, it's sad that many of us are just busy serving social media or other stuff on the mobile phones or laptops all the time. Do pick up a sport that interests you and make it a part of your daily routine.
10. Overeating to avoid food wastage
Isn't it so common? We usually eat that last bite even after knowing that we are full. Habits like this cause health problems over a period of time. It may be a human centric idea not to waste food but we must notice so many other species that are living around us. Feeding them would be a better idea than overloading our belly. Nothing special to prepare for them but just give the extra food you got after you are done.
So these are some good health which are in my opinion highly underrated and under appreciated. Just add these habits to your daily lifestyle and you will gain amazing benefits out of them .
