Hey there! Today I will share 5 foods that you are eating the wrong way and I will also mention the right way of consuming them to derive maximum gain out of them.
5 Daily Food That You Should Stop Eating In the Wrong Way
1. Roti
Not even a day goes without eating roti for many of us. It is filling, nutritious and staple. However many people complain of digestive disorders after consuming the Roti.
The prime reason for this problem is the way it is prepared nowadays. We can blame it on today's fast and modern lifestyle. We often cook Roti on Tawa for a while and then quickly put it on the direct flame to make it cook faster. This method gives it an inflated look and also saves time.
However, by this method the outer part of the Roti is cooked properly but the inner part remains half cooked. Imagine a potato cooked in this way . The outer part of the potato looks cooked or even burnt but if you cut it in two pieces then you find it uncooked inside.
Preparing Roti in this way can cause bloating, acidity and flatulence. This is not the traditional way of cooking the Roti either. Roti was slowly prepared on the tawa .
However it may take 2 minutes longer to cook Roti in this way but it is more nutritious, tastier and easier to digest. Well you don't need to compromise with its puffed look as well, just use a cotton cloth to press it from the edges and you will get its puffed texture.
Another useful trick to make Roti is that the more time you take to knead the dough, the more soft, tasty , easy to digest and nutritious the Roti will be. Often we knead the dough at the last moment.
Avoid this mistake and simply knead the dough and give it enough time to sit while you prepare the curry.
Kneading the dough in the milk and having this Roti with a savoury dish is asking for skin problems.
If your goal is to lose weight, avoid putting ghee on the roti, instead add it to the curry.
These atomic tips will help you reach your health goal faster and let you get maximum out of this traditional food.
2. Red chili powder
Spices are the soul of Indian food. They are not only added for the flavour but they dissociate their therapeutic values into the food also.
If you often suffer from body heat issues like excessing sweating, skin problems, premature greying of hair, hair fall or pigmentation of the skin, then you must keep red chili powder at bay.
Being a strong stimulant and highly inflammatory, if used indiscriminately, it may cause inflaming problems like peptic ulcers or piles.
Red chilies are found generously in the coastal areas of India like Andhra, Kerala and Tamil Nadu but that is actually a smart way to beat the excess moisture that results from the temperate weather conditions. To replicate the same in the plains is the same as using the heater in the summer.
So should we start eating bland food? Of course not. Red chilies can be replaced with green chilies when making something like a paratha and in other dishes it can be replaced by black pepper.
Ayurveda suggests the trikatu churna which is a mixture of black pepper, long pepper and ginger powder. It is an ideal swap for the red chili powder. Try it out and you will notice your body heat reducing.
3. Banana
Easy on the pocket, always available and an impressive nutrient profile makes it stand out among all fruits. It is not only delicious in taste but it contains all the ingredients that you require to recharge you physically as well as mentally.
However I'm talking about the ripened banana here. Here I do not recommend the one which is sold like a clean cake in the market these days . The ripened banana is not solid yellow in colour but it has black spots on its body.
The stem of the ripened banana is black in colour and not greenish. Another indicator is that the unripe banana won't be very sweet in the taste but it would be unpalatable, starchy and bitter.
Our body gets a hard time digesting unripe bananas and it fails to assimilate the nutrients from it. If it is used in the long run, it may cause digestion issues, bloating, allergic reactions, constipation and acidity.
So the next time you go out to buy the banana, go for the ripened bananas instead of raw and solid yellow colored bananas. If you do not find the ripened bananas, just buy them raw and let them get ripped for a few days and then consume them.
Bananas are not only rich in nutrients but also beats the taste of all the sweets. Bananas are rich in calcium, but do You know what contains more calcium?
The fibres of the banana peel. So don't forget to scratch them with a spoon and have them along.
Banana is often known as a synonym of weight gain. Although if you have one banana with black pepper powder sprinkled over it, 30 minutes before breakfast, it will help you cut the extra fat from the body.
Banana mixed with ghee and jaggery is a natural weight gainer.
So it is just not a food on the paper but it is about the way it is eaten which makes all the difference.
4. Onion
Onion has a lot of curative benefits attributed to its name. But Do you wonder why it is never consumed on a fast? or why some people completely abstain from it? Well that is because of its tamasic nature.
In simple words, the inherent property of the onion promotes lethargy. In an experiment a person consumed Gobhi paratha and then the next day he consumed onion paratha and it was observed that he felt more lethargic and stressed on the day he consumed onion paratha in comparison with the day he consumed the Gobi paratha.
When the onions in moderation promote memory, when consumed daily they can reduce concentration power and promote anger and agitation.
So if you are a student preparing for an upcoming exam or someone dealing with anger or depression, skipping onions for a while might come as a relief.
Indian curries are incomplete without the onion in them. Well we fry the onions too much, they absorb the oil like a sponge and release it into the body which promotes weight gain. So a smart workaround would be to sauté them mildly and not until they get brown.
Onions consumed as salad in small quantities benefit the most, specially in hair problems and thyroid issues.
Overall it is a powerful food and should be consumed with taking into consideration the current state of your mind and your affinity towards it.
5. Honey
Since honey's composition is the same as the human blood, it gets easily assimilated by our body.
It is not only the natural sweetener bit, it is also a storehouse of the micro nutrients and is hailed in Ayurveda for its medicinal properties.
Since it is sensitive food, one should be very careful about how it is consumed because it can harm our body easily too.
We often add honey to boiling water, herbal tea or sometimes directly on the flame while preparing certain dishes like honey chilli potato or baking cakes. It is a mistake as honey should never be heated. Forget nutrition, heating changes its natural composition turning it into a glue like substance.
Ayurveda equates this heated honey with the slow poison which may stick to subtle channels of the body and block them.
Modern studies show that the heated honey produces a compound called HMF. When this HMF was given to the bees, their death suddenly increased and when it was given to the rats, it caused severe kidney and liver damage. Even in humans cytotoxicity in mucous membrane, carcinogenicity and lung damage was reported.
So if you want to cut extra fat from the body, just add the honey in the lukewarm water, not boiling hot water. Honey can also be added in the warm water.
Now the equal quantity of ghee and honey is also avoided. On the safer side if you are adding ghee to any dish, avoid honey.
No doubt honey is a superfood but it must be consumed in the right way.
So these were those 5 foods that I felt a majority of us are eating in the wrong way on a daily basis. Knowing the benefits of a food is one thing but it is the way the food is eaten which brings all the difference. This is the key point Ayurveda presses on.
